What is ISCC certification?
ISCC (International Sustainable Carbon Certification) is a non-profit organization founded in Germany whose original purpose was to calculate (estimate) greenhouse gas emissions of biologically derived motor fuels and to certify their sustainable production with ISCC certification.
Over time, it extended its system not only to agriculture, but also to energy sources of waste origin, e.g. on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources Directive 2018/2001/EU (RED II). In addition, it has developed requirements for sustainable production and traceability for agricultural crops and products produced for purposes other than fuel, e.g. food or other industrial raw materials, the application of which is recognized by ISCC certification. This is known as ISCC Plus certification.
Who should consider ISCC certification?
ISCC certification is primarily needed by those organizations from whom their customers expect it. However, it may happen that a new buyer's supplier can only be included with an ISCC certificate. In such cases, rapid implementation of ISCC and ISCC certification may be necessary.
Therefore, it is worth thinking about all those companies involved in these value chains before customer demand appears. In the agricultural product supply chain, the first subjects of ISCC certification are crop purchasers. They are responsible for supervising farmers in the ISCC system for compliance with ISCC requirements. Members of the value chain following farmers (including traders and processors) may carry out annual audits demonstrating compliance with the requirements of the ISCC scheme. If they do this, they can sell their raw materials purchased with ISCC certificate, even after processing, with ISCC certificate. This is also true for sustainable energy and food value chains.
